- More A.I.G. - Floyd Norris Blog - NYTimes.com: AIG has already covered 50% of the losses incurred by CDO holders that bought CDS's from AIG. A new SPV will buy the same CDO for half price so the original holder recoups 100%. Thus $35 B buys $70 B of paper. The new vehicle will get $30 billion from the government and $5 billion from AIG. AIG earns Libor+3% on that $5 billion, with the possibility of additional profits. The government will get Libor+1% for holding the senior notes. AIG also lent assets to short sellers but invested the collateral cash in mortgage backed securities instead of safe money market funds. AIG's investments tanked and it couldn't return the short seller's collateral. A new SPV will buy the mortgage backed securities at an estimated market price. The government gets the senior tranche for $22.5 B. AIG gets the bottom tranche for $1 B. AIG repays the short seller with its own cash plus the proceeds of the sale of the securities to the CDO. This SPV will make money if the market price is low enough.
