National Medallion Signature Guarantee Defined

A statement (a stamp and signature) given by a participant in the guarantee program to ensure that the sale, transfer, or assignment of a security certificate is not fraudulent. The guarantor could be a commercial bank, credit union, brokerage firm, or other financial institution that is a member of a medallion signature guarantee program approved by the Securities Transfer Association and the SEC. Three such programs exist: Securities Transfer Association Medallion Program (STAMP), the NY Stock Exchange Program (MSP), and the Stock Exchange Medallion Program (SEMP). The medallion program is not a guarantee by a notary public.
